Spectre
Mantra Voluntatis
(2006, SPQR)

Ain Soph is een Italiaans gezelschap dat sedert 1984 a.D. stelselmatig de revolutie predikt. Dat deed men met pure industrial, ritual ambient, geluidsexperimenten, traditionele missen, heidense gezangen, ideologische toespraken van kwestieuze signatuur, middeleeuwse referenties en (de naam van de band zegt het al), een lekkere dosis mystiek. Nou is Italië natuurlijk ook het land van de paus, de renaissance, de P2-loge, de maffia, Mussolini en Julius Evola, dus voor de denkers binnen de muziek ligt het al dan niet betreurenswaardige engagement voor het oprapen.


Geen plaat binnen het inmiddels behoorlijk omvangrijke oeuvre van de band lijkt veel op een andere.


Vorige maand verscheen het soloalbum een van de bandleden van Ain Soph: Specte. Het heet Mantra Voluntatis, en voert ons langs de spannende paden van de Italiaanse underground.


Mysterieuze stemmen, kerkklokken, folky gitaarmuziek, fluisterende romantische teksten, serene droefenis, kortom vooral veel in galm en koppige wijn gedrenkte melancholie. Welke taal kan deze muzikale beelden beter begeleiden dan de Italiaanse? Welk land kan bogen op zo’n rijke geschiedenis en zo een enerverende, doch ook beangstigende traditie? Bijkans retorische vragen die men zich stelt bij het beluisteren van al dat fraais. Vooral de klokken in ‘Apocalypse’, en de teksten verspreid over het gehele album zijn om voor op de knieën te gaan.


Albin Julius van Der Blutharsch is aanwezig op ‘Next Time’. ‘House of the King’ is een cover van het Nederlandse Focus (u weet nog wel, met de gitaar van Jan Akkerman en de fluit van Thijs van Leer), het betreft hier een alarmschijf uit 1971. Verder wordt Serge Gainsbourg niet onverdienstelijk gecoverd op ‘Melody’, en waren de geesten rond van Andy Warhol en Edgar Allen Poe. Het motto van de cd is opgetekend uit de mond van Warhol.


Dit soort artiesten poogt steeds weer een tijdloos werkje neer te zetten, zowel muzikaal als thematisch. Onder hen zijn er die herhaaldelijk hetzelfde kunstje blijven opvoeren. Zo niet Spectre. Zijn nieuwe album is doordacht en homogeen, maar vooral natuurlijk traditioneel. Niet meer zo revolutionair als de vroegere albums van Ain Soph misschien, maar in ieder geval wel gemaakt met een vergelijkbare gedrevenheid, en een onaflatende drang tot thematisch zoeken. Thematisch ja, want muzikaal lijkt Spectre zijn draai op Mantra Voluntatis volledig te hebben gevonden.
