KANNONAU "Initium" Misty Circles / HR!SPQR - 2008 CD - 500 copies Kannonau's debut miniCD on Misty Circles, released few years ago, showed the potentials of an interesting young band, willing to part from the consolidated and weary neofolk stereotypes to explore personal and more inspired territories. Their debut album "Initium" achieves this goal, offering a collection of refined atmospheres and some truly beautiful songs. The trio from southern Italy knows how to play their instruments, which is not so obvious these days when we're dealing with neofolk: both acoustic ballads like "Death To The Weak" or "Addio!", and the more martial, keyboards-driven tunes like the fantastic "La Fine Dell'Uomo" (already featured on the miniCD) or "Revenge" are set on excellent standards. Using percussion, drums, strings, acoustic guitar and great gloomy keyboards, Kannonau manage to conjure a mysterious and spiritual dimension. It would be rather simplistic to file their music under neofolk, as their sound develops into different directions: acoustic, martial and darkwave are the ingredients of a dark and epic music, evoking sceneries of ancient rituals and lonely warriors fighting for their honour and the oath of blood they took. Vocals are convincing too, especially in their mother tongue Italian, which they should probably use more than the over abused English. "Initium" is a very good starting point for this new and extremely promising band. - Simon V. Website: http://www.kannonau.com Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/kannonau
